Portable Photosynthesis System
LI-6400

pastilleThe LI-6400 represents the state of the art photosynthesis instrument for laboratory or field measurement of whole leaves.
The user has control of all environmental variables such as CO2, H2O, leaf temperature and light, yet the entire system, including all options, can be easily carried in your two hands.

LI-6400 LicorpastilleIt is the first photosynthesis measurement system to put the gas analysers in the sensor head. These analysers feature a novel, open path design with the optical bench of the sample analyser open directly to the leaf chamber. The LI-6400 sensor head has two complete, dual path, non-dispersive infrared analysers, which both measure absolute concentrations of CO2 and H2O. There are no assumptions made about incoming gas concentrations. Absolute values of both references and sample mole fractions are measured continuously.

pastilleThe LI-6400 also has a variety of chambers and accessories to accommodate your research needs. These chambers and accessories include : the Needle Chamber, Conifer Chamber, Narrow Leaf Chamber, Clear Chamber Bottom, Red/Blue LED Light Source, Soil CO2 Flux Chamber, Sample Cell Outlet Manifold, and several fluorometer adapter chambers, including the FMS2/PAM2000 Adapter, and the Opti-Sciences Adapter Chamber.

The new 6400-40 Leaf Chamber Fluorometer is an exciting addition that transforms the LI-6400 Portable Photosynthesis System into the most powerful, fully integrated Portable Fluorescence and Gas Exchange System available. The Leaf Chamber Fluorometer is field installable and easily attaches to the LI-6400 Sensor Head, with no extra boxes, power supplies, fiber optic cables, or significant added weight.

  • Integrated, simultaneous gas exchange and fluorescence over the same leaf area
  • Simple field installation
  • Independent control of red and blue light
  • No fiber optic light guide
  • Automated gas exchange and fluorescent light response
  • Low power consumption

New Technology

The Leaf Chamber Fluorometer provides complete control over the actinic (independently controlled red and blue LEDs) light, the measuring (red) light modulated from 0.25 to 20 kHz, and the saturating pulse timing and intensity, and far-red LED for PSI excitation. The Leaf Chamber Fluorometer can also be used as a light source with independent control of red and blue light. Along with measured and computed variables, the flexible OPEN software also facilitates computation of user-defined parameters.

Data Output

The new OPEN Software provides integrated control over gas exchange and fluorescence measurements to perform a wide variety of manual and automatic protocols. For the first time, fluorescence measurements are made on the entire leaf area enclosed inside the chamber, and logged into the same data file as photosynthesis measurements. Real-time numeric and graphic fluorescence and gas exchange data are available on the LI-6400 console, as shown below (fluorescence vs. time shown).

Data files can be viewed, edited on-board, downloaded to the computer in spreadsheet-ready format, or plotted on the LI-6400 display, as shown below. As many as three graphs of selected parameters can be shown at one time on the display.

Automatic measurement protocols (AutoPrograms) are included with OPEN software, which are easily modified, if desired. Remote computer control of the LI-6400 and Leaf Chamber Fluorometer is also available using the WinLPL (Windows® version) and MacLPL (Macintosh® version) programs included with the LI-6400. This allows you to view real-time numeric and graphic data simultaneously, and provides a unique training tool when viewed on the computer monitor or projected onto a screen.

Using WinLPL (above) or MacLPL, you can perform all LI-6400 functions from your computer, as well as view real-time plots of your data.

The 6400-70 allows the LI-6400 to be powered from mains power. It includes a wall adapter and the module, which fits in a battery compartment in the console. A battery is not required - one can be plugged into the AC module, however, to provide a backup in case of power failure. The battery will also trickle charge when connected to the AC module.

The LI-6400 Chambers

LI6400 Chambers

pastilleThe LI-6400 chambers are carefully constructed for ultimate ease of use and minimal environmental disturbance.

Chamber materials and coatings have been selected for optimal water sorption and energy balance characteristics : internal surfaces are nickel plated to mimimize water sorption, and external surfaces are either bright anodized aluminium or covered with titanium dioxide white epoxy to minimize radiation absorptance and maximize emissivity.

The chambers gaskets have minimal interaction with CO2 and water vapor, seal tightly, and do not exhibit a permanent memory where leaf midribs and other structures press into the gaskets when the chamber is sealed.

  • 6400-08 Clear Chamber Bottom,
  • 6400-07 Needle Chamber,
  • 6400-05 Conifer Chamber,
  • 6400-11 Narrow Leaf Chamber,
  • 6400-09 Soil CO2 Flux Chamber,
  • 6400-15 Arabidopsis Chamber,
  • Fluorescence Chambers,
  • 6400-06 FMS2 and PAM2000 Adapter,
  • 6400-10 MiniPAM Adapter,
  • 6400-14 Opti-Sciences Adapter.

pastilleThe 6400-09 Soil CO2 Flux Chamber brings the full power of LI-COR's LI-6400 Portable Photosynthesis System to soil CO2 flux measurements. Software automation, excellent flow control, analyzers in the sensor head, and a carefully constructed chamber provide high accuracy and repeatability.

The CO2 and H2O analyzers in the LI-6400 sensor head are connected directly to the soil chamber for fast response. The LI-6400 console displays flux rate calculations in numeric and graphical form for evaluation in the field.

The 6400-09, in conjunction with the LI-6400, provides maximum operational convenience and addresses the measurement issues for soil CO2 flux measurements.

pastilleThe  6400-15 Arabidopsis Chamber was designed for measurements of small leaves, particularly leaves which are difficult to clamp with conventional chambers, such as Arabidopsis. This new chamber has clear apertures for natural illumination of the top and bottom of the leaf. The apertures are 1.0 cm in diameter and are positioned 8.5 cm away from the main body of the IRGA. This design allows researchers to make measurements and access small leaves that are tightly bunched together. Until now these measurements were difficult, if not impossible to measure.

The chamber apertures are covered with a clear Propafilm® window. These windows give excellent light transmission with very little thermal trapping and minimal water sorption. They are also easily replaceable and economically priced, so that properties can be maintained. Leaf temperature is computed using energy balance by thermocouple measurement of air exiting the chamber and radiation measurement with a standard quantum sensor.

The chamber is made with plated aluminum which results in low water sorption and a more durable finish. The outside of the chamber is then painted with a very durable white paint for improved energy balance.
